Recording of talk by dance scholar Ahalya Satkunaratnam.Ahalya Satkunaratnam is a Chicagoan at heart and on the dance floor and a Malaysian-born dance scholar and dancer who found herself in Vancouver after joining the faculty of Quest University Canada in 2014. There, she teaches courses in cultural studies, performing arts, and women’s and gender studies. Her upcoming book to be published by Wesleyan University Press, Moving Bodies, Navigating Conflict: Practicing Bharata Natyam in Colombo, Sri Lanka, explores how dance practices make and undo local and state nationalisms, the intersections of gender and ethnicity with cultural practices, and the personal experiences of Sri Lanka's 26-year civil war.

Below the Radar explores immigration and connecting to community and social justice movements through art with Adriana Contreras, a visual artist and storyteller who captures dialogues as they unfold as a graphic recorder with Drawing Change.Adriana is in conversation with co-hosts Fiorella Pinillos and Melissa Roach about her journey with visual arts and dance as a first generation immigrant from Colombia. Adriana tells us how her love for the arts has shaped her career, sharing her experiences of working as a visual artist and communicator at the intersection of art and social change.

Originally from Italy and with a PhD in Sociology, Alessandra has been curating international and multidisciplinary artists' residency programs in Italy and Europe.
