Abstract
Having a reliable network is a hard requirement for Telecommunication companies when deploying new networks. Service providers and enterprise customers lose a lot of money any time an interruption of internet service occurs. The SONETISDH specification specifies several different types of topology that support redundancy. An Automatic Protection Switching (APS) mechanism is specified for each topology to dictate how a network behaves in a failure event. For this project, a software implementation of APS is coded and tested on a PMC SONETISDH Demonstration System Platform.
