Abstract
"Modisation'' of Indian Politics has garnered much interest over the years from political enthusiasts across the board. Brimmed with numerous memorable slogans and catchphrases, Indian General Elections provide a distinct context to understand politics of the time - from "India Shining'' to "Modi hai toh mumkin hai (Modi makes it possible)", the stage provides a broad understanding of what the voter is consuming and responding to. This study examines the personalization of Indian politics, focusing on the role of Narendra Modi as a catalyst for this process. It delves into the historical context of political personalization in India, tracing it from the era of Nehru to the present Modi regime. The study analyzes the effect of Modi's personal appeal on voter behavior and election outcomes, drawing on data from the CSES – Cicero India Post Poll 2019 Survey. The research identifies key indicators of personalization and explores their manifestation in electoral strategies and party dynamics. The findings suggest that Modi's leadership style, characterized by strong central authority and anti-institutionalism stance has significantly influenced voter preferences. The study also highlights the limitations of personalization, noting that other factors such as partisanship and local and regional political issues continue to play a key role in Indian Elections. This is most evident in the 2024 general election, where Modi's BJP fell well short of expectations, securing 63 fewer parliamentary seats than in the 2019 election. The research concludes with a discussion on the implications of personalisation and examination of the 2024 mandate in this framework.
