Bürgmuller Variation 1

My student Bonnie and I initiated an improvisational duet with the opening phrase of Petite Reunion from Bürgmuller's book. This recording is our first try to use an entire musical phrase from a classical piece as the launch of a duet improvisation. Bonnie seemed confused and could not decide when and how to make sounds with me. She kept turning to me, looking at my face and waiting for my instruction or approval. I tried to lead her with clear melodies and rhythmic patterns, but she chased me hesitantly and could only play a few uncertain off-beat notes.
