Abstract
This thesis examines the impact of Direct trade (DT)–an "upgrading" strategy–on coffee producers, aiming to elucidate its economic and social implications. Through field research in Colombia, the third-largest coffee producer globally, it is found that DT significantly boosts profits for specialty coffee producers by offering higher prices and income stability. However, this economic benefit is counterbalanced by increased production costs and risks like delayed payments, making it most accessible to already better-off producers. Additionally, DT alters social dynamics, with some producers experiencing improved community connections while others face envy and disruption of local economic ties, jeopardizing future economic relationships. Overall, while DT offers financial gains, it also presents challenges that necessitate a nuanced understanding of the impacts of Direct Trade on producers' lives.
