Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which encompasses many conditions of the heart including stroke, hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, sudden cardiac death, and congestive heart failure, is the leading cause of death in North America. Recent statistics from Health Canada state that 1/3 of all deaths are due to CVD, and that 8/10 Canadians are at risk of developing CVD, with the risk increasing with age.The goal of our project is to build an affordable portable home heart monitor that can assess the user's short-term and long-term risk of developing CVD, educate the user on actions they can take to decrease said risk, and track their progress. By doing so, our aim is to decrease the prevalence of CVD.
