Abstract
In partnership with the National Music Centre, Spur makes some noise with Chris Walter, Heather Haley, Luke Meat, Tim Bogdachev and Jesse Gander to discuss the punk aesthetic and the pivotal role of the renegade artist in society and culture.Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols, claimed the success of the punk movement was its ability to make ugliness beautiful. Read another way, punk was successful because it made noise out of stale silence. It took a stand against stagnant and stodgy culture. Punk was never just about the music: it was a movement, a style, a state of mind adopted by those that saw the beauty in ripped jeans and safety pins and the power in cacophony.
