Abstract
In Reading Machine, the artist is seen from a distance dropping books from the window of an apartment building. Several of the books separate from their dust jackets, which swoop behind, falling at a slower rate. The video reverses, allowing the books to return to Clay’s hands, before looping again. In installation, the video plays on a small screen, embedded into the sloping top surface of a lectern. On the shelves below are stowed several old, damaged books: The Collected Essays of Marx and Engels and others.
